Tea-Caffenol & Persephone’s Elixir – Dec 2021
My most recent experimental film processing recipe which I’ve named Tea-Caffenol:
Bottle 1
• 150ml water
• 20 grams Folders coffee
• 5 grams black tea/maté blend
Bottle 2
• 150ml water
• 12 grams washing soda
Bottle 3
• 150ml water
• 50ml rosé
• 10grams Vit C
- Combine.
- Strain.
- Stand (5 mins).
- Develop (9 mins at 20ºC).
- Fix.
- Rinse.
I’m a caffeine-intolerant teetotaller, so can’t drink most of the consumables in this recipe. This was the inspiration for the adaptation. The base recipe is the tried and true Caffenol Delta-STD, heavily modified of course. For mine, I added rosé, and also brought back the use of tea in the formula, which I later found out was initially used at R.I.T. in 1995 (their formula was equal parts tea and coffee).
My film camera is the Canon EOS Rebel S – the no QD, no panorama model. [Ref] I use Ilford’s Rapid Fixer (1+4 mix).

The inspiration behind the name comes from the Greek myth of Persephone. The smoothie incorporates as many seeds, fruits and vegetables as possible (spring, grain), is stuffed with supplements for vitality (life), and of course, it contains pomegranates in raw form, and from concentrate. The other motifs (death, destruction, flowers) are represented with the use of bitters.
It’s definitely overkill so I do this around once a week, and sip slowly during a full day, but it tastes good!
